West Bloomfield High School has changed the consequences regarding the tardy policy for the 2017-2018 school year. The new policy states that the third unexcused tardy will result in an afterschool detention on either a Tuesday or Thursday. Previously, the consequence of a third unexcused tardy would be to attend a Saturday school, or else a suspension would be issued.
During this time, students must bring enough work to last them the entire time. If they fail to meet this, they’ll be asked to leave. If a student doesn’t show up for their detention, the hours that they have to serve will double. This will happen again if a student fails to show up for a second time. By the third time, a student will receive a disciplinary referral which will result in further consequences.
According to Principal Watson, “we looked at the data and it showed that most students didn’t attend the Saturday school and the reason was they had to work or they didn’t have a ride for Saturday. So we decided there needed to be some type of consequence, and the best time to do it would be a Tuesday or Thursday after school, that way you’re already there. You just simply have to be in the room from 2:30 to 5 p.m, it’ll make it more convenient for you and your family.”
With this new change, Lakers must make sure to not get 3 unexcused tardies, otherwise they’ll definitely regret it.
