Introducing the Spectrum Spotlight for the 2017-2018 school year, a monthly series in which West Bloomfield High School Students have the opportunity to be highlighted for their unique talents and interests. This week’s Spotlight is on a senior with a special lyrical talent. Ryan Horwitz may seem like a regular student, but in his free time, he transforms into Ryguy the rapper. With more than 7,000 Soundcloud plays and over 600 followers on Twitter, he’s starting to gain a fanbase online. Spectrum reached out to Ryguy so he could answer some questions about his burgeoning rap career.

Who is your favorite artist?

Nav is my favorite artist. I love the way his music sounds and the feelings his songs produce. Most of his songs have similar melodies, but every artist establishes their own sound. The use of his undertone melodies is amazing and it goes so well together. Knowing that he started out similarly to how I did is crazy to think about.

Who is your biggest supporter?

I have a few big supporters including my friends Corbin, Trevor, Eric, Jordan, the Civeleks, and of course Jo. Jo has always showed love to my songs and I can’t thank her enough for it. I understand that not everyone likes my music and some think nothing of me as an artist and show no respect, but that won’t stop me. I find making music extremely fun and stress relieving, and sometimes I really like how my sound turns out.

What got you into music?

I’ve always loved music but recently I’ve just been enjoying it like never before. I can’t even describe the feelings that flood my brain when I listen to music. Music is so much more than what most people hear, but I truly believe I hear it how it’s intended to be heard.

What has been your biggest struggle in making music?

Making sure people actually listen to what I’m talking about. I put thought and feelings into my lyrics but I feel like it just goes over people’s heads.

What has been your biggest achievement in making music?

My biggest achievement was reaching my first thousand plays. I honestly couldn’t believe it happened, but I was so happy.

When did you start making music?

I started making music just about three and a half months ago.

Do you collaborate with anyone? If so, how often and with who?

I’ve got some collaboration projects in the making, as well as future plans to work with other artists. I’m pretty excited about that.
