The ups and downs of love

What is Love?

Love. Everyone experiences it, everyone needs it in life, but what does it mean? The definition of love is an intense feeling of deep affection, or a person or material thing that one loves. Every person needs love because without it, self-esteem and loneliness can be an issue. There are different ways of love. In today’s society love can be between family, relationships, pets, material things, life, and anything that is felt to be cherished.

This word love is very strong and has many side effects, which involve doing damage to the body, or giving more life. Studies show that it can be addicting because of the dopamine in the brain. Helen Fisher, PhD, is a biological anthropologist and she states “That someone takes a special meaning to you and you focus on this individual because the dopamine system has been activated. It is what triggers very goal oriented behavior, where no one else matters but your new partner.” Dopamine is in all stages of love. The beginning stages and long term relationships in particular.

Heartaches and heartbreaks are also caused from love, which is also known as the broken heart, an intense emotional pain or suffering one feels after losing a loved one. Whether it be through death, breakup, separation, betrayal, or rejection, they cause the same amount of pain. Although a “broken heart” is common for people to say, it does not actually break the heart. While there is a condition called Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, which triggers the brain to send chemicals to weaken the heart tissues. Love is selfish, but love is also kind.

There are many amazing things that come with love. It is a fact that being in love does make a person change. Everything is positive, great mental health, more energy, increases optimism, and even your physical appearance is enhanced according to Kathryn Rateliff from Demand Media. Being in love, does not always have to be with another human being. Love is strong, and has a major effect on everyone.
