One Final Argument

No Debate that WBHS will miss Debate Team Seniors

One+Final+Argument

Ask anyone on the debate team and they can say they had one of their best seasons yet! The two seniors, Anna Ringuette and Samantha Oldenburg, stand tall and proud as the leaders of an accomplished debate team. When we got the chance to speak to Ringuette she tells us that her favorite part of debate was “The team. Debate brought so many funny, intelligent, and interesting people into my life and I’m incredibly grateful for that.” The debate team has a lot to be proud of.  For example, the novices were MIFA state finalists while the varsity debaters were  MIFA state semifinalists. Throughout the season, members of both teams broke into elimination rounds and received speaker awards.

Of course, none of this would have been accomplished without the remarkable leadership of both seniors. The seniors could not be prouder of their team, who they coached all the way to Novice State Tournament and the semifinals for the Varsity State Tournament. Oldenburg tells us that her proudest moment was, “seeing our novices in the final round of the state tournament. All the varsity kids helped coach them at one point or another. They’re going to be amazing debaters next year and I’m proud of how they’ve grown.”

The Debate team was restored this year, Oldenburg says “ we went from having 5 members last year to having three time that number now!” The seniors could not be prouder of their team, who they coached all the way to Novice State Tournament and the semifinals for the Varsity State Tournament. The seniors were not only great coaches, but also great debaters. As teacher and coach Joel Thursam said, “They finished fourth in the state this year so I would say that they did very well and the seniors actually finished fourth in the state when they were novices.” These seniors are exceptional students and people in general and their coach leaves them with these words when they go off on their own, “Just good luck, enjoy college and debate on!”
